Did you ever wonder who gets into the Ivy League, that revered collection of eight universities and colleges whose admittance rates range from 7 to 18 percent? It's not who you might think. Only 33 to 50 percent are white, and among the whites who are admitted, the vast majority are Jewish.
PERCENT OF WHITES IN IVY LEAGUE WHO ARE JEWISH:
76% Columbia
61% Yale
59% Harvard
57% Brown
54% Cornell
51% University of Pennsylvania
22% Princeton
22% Dartmouth
At five of the eight Ivies -- Harvard, Yale, Brown, University of Pennsylvania and Cornell -- the student body is divided among the ethnicities in a particular pattern: 1) Jews, 2) White Non-Jews, 3) Asians, 4) Hispanics, and 5) Blacks. At these universities, Jews make up 25-30 percent of the total population of students, with non-Jewish Whites making up 18-24 percent of the population, Asians comprising 12-18 percent, Hispanics 9-10 percent, and Blacks 5-7 percent, per statistics of CollegeBoard and Hillel.
Considering that Jews number about 2 percent of the national population and Asians number about 4 percent, their significant presence in the Ivy League is astounding. Is it merely that more of them apply to the Ivies, or are the applicants who do apply that much more qualified for admission, or is there something else going on?
An Ivy League education is often considered the ticket to many prestigious, lucrative and influential careers. The resumes of many professors, CEO's and Presidential advisors boast an Ivy degree. It's worth figuring out what the secret to Ivy admission is, considering all that rides on it.
Instead of giving them a list to accompany each flight, I let tasters form opinions, make some assumptions and guess the grape before making the big reveal, something I thought would make the tasting more interactive. How would they react to one of the most sexy Vidal Blancs I’ve ever tasted without knowing it’s a hybrid? Would they pick out a Niagara Cabernet Franc from a cool year that lacks the overt bell pepper aroma they associate with it?
